3DTV: The Next Big Thing Or The Next Betamax?
January 5th 2010 21:41
Sony is jumping full force behind the idea of 3DTV. A company spokesman thinks that Sony 3D sets will be at least 30% and possibly up to 50% of its total TVs sold by 2012.
It also doesn't take an insider to see that 3DTV will be the hot topic at this months Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this month.
I think it will eventually be a good idea, but I would caution my readers to take a wait and see approach. Remember Sony was the developer of the Betamax and the dreaded defective Blue Blob sets.
We are still a couple of years away from having enough programming to make the extra purchases required to view in 3D worth it. The glasses could cost up to 200 dollars and you still have to buy a transmitter to go with the 3D set.
If you must be the first on your block to own a 3DTV, then I would suggest that you go the DLP route. Samsung and Mitsubishi have 3D ready sets available now for under 1,000 dollars.
