Archie Comics Introduces First Gay Character
April 26th 2010 23:34
Veronica, Archie's on again off again love interest for the last thirty years, has finally met a guy who can resist her charm.
Kevin Keller, who debuts in Veronica Comics "Isn't It Bromantic?," seems to have more in common with fellow foodaholic Jughead. The first openly gay character in the history of the comic series, was developed to keep the world of Archie "current and inclusive." Archie's hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books," Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater said in announcing the news.
This is just the latest step toward Riverdale showing more diversity. In the new story line of Archie Comics, the redheaded star is dating neither Veronica or Betty -- but Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats.
That might explain why Riverdale High will also see an influx of 50 students this fall, according to Victor Gorelick, editor in chief of Archie Comics. "Another school will be shut because of budget cuts, and that closing will have a ripple effect," he says.
As for whether any other Riverdale students will proclaim that they are gay, Gorelick stated that "traditional Riverdale characters won't be coming out."
I guess I was wrong about Jughead then.

Well, had there been more than one on the Ark, you'd know what I was talking about.

And YES there have been some black characters in the Archie Comix in the past, there were certainly some in the 1970's, but I'm unaware of asians or indians or that sort of diversity...

Hopefully with the 50 or so new students coming in at Riverdale, they will break down perfectly with the census info regarding race/sexual preference. They will probably have to do at least one twofer..say have a transgendered Asian and a Bi Indian...thats the only way they can make it work.
