Bad Movies That I Love: Nothing But Trouble
June 28th 2009 13:58
This is the fifth in a ten part series
What do you get when you cross the writing of Dan Ackroyd, the unmistakable acting skills of Chevy Chase, John Candy, and Demi Moore, and an appearance by Tupac and the Digital Underground? Apparently, according to most critics and moviegoers, you get a really bad film.
By all calculations, 1991s Nothing But Trouble should have been a slam dunk success. Proven actors along with a big studio like Warner Brothers to promote it, somehow it still landed with a tremendous thud at the box office.
In my opinion it was just a little too strange and unorthodox to be accepted by the general public.
The story begins with Chase and Moore meeting in an elevator and agreeing to go to a party later. At the party Chris(Chase) and Diane(Moore) decide to take a drive to Atlantic City the following day. Fast forward to the next day, and the hungover Chris has learned that not only will he be driving Diane, but also two obnoxius "Brazillionaires" on the trip.
They all decide to take the scenic drive as opposed to the New Jersey turnpike to have a picnic. When Chris fails to make a complete stop at a stop sign, he is convinced by the group to outrun the local "Valkenvanian" police. They are cornered and arrested and taken to the off the map toxic New Jersey town. They are quickly arraigned by the judge(Ackroyd) who happens to hate bankers(Chris's occupation is in investments) and are detained for a weekend of comic horror. This is where the story takes off with hilarious scenes. including a shotgun wedding, a penis nose prosthetic, and the answer to what really happened to Jimmy Hoffa.
Humpty Hump and Tupac play a small part as members of a group caught speeding in the nightmare of a town. They are ordered to perform two songs(Tie The Knot and Same Song) to prove that they are indeed musicians and not evil bankers.
The movie is readily available for rental and from time to time is shown on television.
