Bad Movies That I Love: The Man With One Red Shoe

This is the fourth in a ten part series.

Years before Tom Hanks was a multiple Oscar and A listed actor, he not only starred in a bad TV series but also made some incredibly hard to watch films.

The television series was called Bosom Buddies and starred Hanks along with Peter Scolari as bachelors who are forced to cross dress to live in the one apartment building that they could afford. It really was a pretty awful series.

He also made some poor films during this time. Volunteers, The 'burbs, The Money Pit, and Joe Versus The Volcano were all difficult to watch.

Hanks would start getting better roles after his Oscar nomination for 1988's Big, where he played a twelve year old who is magically transformed after a wish into the body of a thirty year old.

The film that I want to highlight never got the critical acclaim of Hank's other roles and doesn't deserve to be looped in with his big screen failures.

The Man With One Red Shoe is the story of Richard Drew, a mild manner violin player in a local symphony, who gets entangled in a game of spy vs spy between dueling departments of the CIA. Richard is picked to be the fall guy to mislead the rival CIA team because he is spotted at the airport sporting one red shoe. The reason he is donning the one shoe look is because his best friend (Jim Belushi) loves to play practical jokes and hid one of Rcihard's shoes while they are touring with the symphony.

Once Richard is marked as the guy that will testify before congress about illegal CIA activities, the adventure and mayhem begins.

Dabney Coleman and the legendary Charles Durning turn in wonderful performances as the dueling CIA operatives.

Carrie Fisher is also good as best friend Morris's lusty wife who is in love with Richard and stunning Lori Singer plays a CIA field agent assigned to find out what Richard knows about the agency.

The film has good action sequences along with more than one plot twist, something rare in 80's comedies.
