Bloggers Beware!

As fewer and fewer people get their news from print or from TV, the popularity of bloggers as reporters is increasing every day. Unfortunately with increased attention also comes additional liabilities.This week a blogger in Houston was jailed for spreading falsehoods about the late Anna Nicole Smith. Just because you don't have a room full of editors and fact checkers doesn't mean you don't have to be just as careful with your posts.

Lawsuits against bloggers in the United States have been doubling every year since 2004 with 15 million dollars in judgments so far against them, according to Robert Cox, president of the Media Bloggers Association.

thats interesting

i notice the woman in the story was put in jail for contempt and not for defamation, the defamation suit is civil and still pending

i also know that legally an anonymous blogger can not be traced through their ISP due to privacy reasons, they can only be traced if they volunteer their contact details
