BP is taking a page out of Rahm Emanuel's "Never let a good crisis go to waste" playbook. The large oil giant has bought the search terms oil spill and deepwater horizon search terms on Google and Yahoo.
Critics call BP's move unethical, "What it effectively does is that it bumps down other legitimate news and opinion pieces that are addressing the spill... and BP is paying big money for that," said Maureen Mackey, a writer for the Fiscal Times.
The Times said BP has confirmed that its digital teams based in Houston and London, together with the company's marketing executives, are engaged in buying search terms. Officials said the strategy was aimed at helping those most affected by the spill, by providing accurate information on the correct forms to fill in and key people to contact.
Most search results pages on Google include paid "sponsored links" at the top.
