Chinese Olympic Kidnapping Program Nets Eleven Medals
March 1st 2010 03:12
Despite taking children away from their parents at an early age and with mega funding from the government, the big bad China Olympic program was only able to win eleven medals at this year's Olympics. This is less than a third of the total that the United States won despite having a huge population and funding advantage.
I think it has less to do with numbers and more to do with passion for their sport. Just because some of the Chinese athletes have been practicing for years doesn't mean they love what they are doing. I would imagine that some grow to dislike both the sport and their country.
Here is a very telling quote from a Chinese ski jumper.
According to the SportsPickle blog:
"The Chinese government sent their athletes off to Vancouver today, but not before holding a large threat really at the Chinese Olympic Training Facility. "Please know that the entire country is behind you and supporting you," said Chinese Olympic Team chairman Li Xian. "But also know that if you fail, if you don't win gold, we will make life very hard for you and your family. Go now. Compete!" Chinese ski jumper Yan Zi Cheng said the threat rally was just what he needed. "I want to do well," he said. "At the same time, I hate my family for putting me in the Olympic program, so I'd be fine with them having a terrible life."
