Don't Blame It On Rio

It bothered me this week how so many pundits seemed to relish that Chicago was the first to be eliminated in voting for the 2016 Olympics. As a sports fan I would have without a doubt made plans to visit and take in some of the ceremonies and events. I appreciate that President Obama took time out of his important schedule to make a personal pitch for his city. After reading his and Michelle's speeches I have to say however, that I am disappointed in their efforts.
I'm sorry to have to be frank but it seemed to be a half-assed effort from two very talented speakers,
I think it was obvious that they didn't write their own speeches or at the very least added some creative fictional footnotes. There were alot of " I's and Me's" as if they were running for Olympic offices. Michelle mentioned that she remembered sitting on her father's lap and watching Carl Lewis win gold medals. The problem? She was in her twenties when Lewis was competing. To steal a line from Ferris Bueller "so that's the way it is in their family" or she misremembered the event. I hope it is the latter as the visual is a little creepy.
The Olympics have for centuries offered athletes the ultimate stage to step up and give the best effort of their lives, the Obamas failed to accept that challenge.
