Mapquest vs Google Maps
November 14th 2009 21:10
I travel in my line of work almost daily. Unfortunately I have a habit of getting lost and refuse to ask for directions. I have asked Santa for a top of the line GPS for Christmas, but until then I depend heavily on my printed directions. For me there has never been a choice before as my company requires me to submit a Mapquest printout to get reimbursed for my mileage. I can use whatever service I like, but for simplicity have always went with Mapquest. Recently though, I have been reading a lot about how many more bells and whistles Google offers (like street views to help with turn by turn directions) While I really like the satellite imagery, I've found that Google's maps are at the least confusing and in many instances wrong. The biggest error that I have found with Google's map is that they will have you looking for a turn that never materializes. (eg. turn right to stay on hwy 1 when you don't have to ever turn)
If you want to try both directions without printing out two separate directions, check out www.mapvsmap.com Its a neat site that shows Google and Mapquest side by side.
Bottom line: I'll stick with Mapquest for now. All the bells and whistles won't matter if your directions get you lost.
For an example check out a sample route that I made this week. Notice the difference in the Hwy 30 route. I never had to turn to stay on this highway.
