Mars Is Up, Venus Is Down

May 28th 2009 01:43
Compared to their counterparts of the 60s and 70s, women today are in better shape, wealthier, and are much more educated. While making giant strides in equality there is one area however, that women have lost ground to men. Men are happier today while women are markedly unhappier than the women of thirty years ago. If you were to look just at the empirical data of income, education, and health then this would definitely be a surprising outcome. I don't have a PhD. and I'm not a woman but I'll take a stab at some of the reasons why this might be the case.

For thousands of years women were caretakers and nurturers, I think it might take generations to overcome the desire to cater to others. This is especially difficult for women in supervisory positions.

Just because women are earning the same as men, doesn't mean that the workload is the same. Most women are still doing the majority of work around the house, especially if there are children involved.

With the entrance of women into the workplace, their appearance is really important. Where most men can jump out of bed, shower and possibly be on the road in minutes, it takes much longer for women, who are still made to wear masks in public. Just this week there was a story of a waitress who was fired for not donning the correct makeup. This along with all of the other commitments cuts deeply into todays woman's leisure time.

Just my observations, I for one would much rather be married to a partner that brings more to the table than June Cleaver

I think you're right that one of the reasons why women might be unhappier is because they were caretakers and nurturers for thousands of years. And I really believe that women were designed to be caretakers and nurturers. When we miss out on doing that (or doing that as well as we would have in the past) we feel like we're missing out on something. Not all women. But lots of women do. Also, we have generally devalued those caretaking and nurturing abilities. So the thing that women are usually best at is seen as something that's not that important.

And I don't think it just comes down to caretaking or nurturing. I think, in general, society has devalued the things that make women special. And the sad thing is it's usually the feminists who have done that. They spend so much time telling women that they can be just like men, that they ignore the fact that women have some pretty special qualities because they are women.

I could write heaps on this, but I'll better stop it there. As it is, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get heavily criticised just for those comments.
