My Father's Day Hit Piece

Do you ever wonder what happened to TV dads like Jim Anderson, Ward Cleaver, or Cliff Huxtable? Today's TV dads seem like idiots compared to those great role models. Is it because many of the targets in recent years have become taboo and the father is the least likely to offend? This could be part of the reasoning, but I think there is probably a more prominent reason why fathers aren't held in high regard today.
We aren't doing a very good job as fathers anymore.
With half of marriages ending in divorce, many fathers think that the monthly child support check is a replacement for teaching their kids to be responsible. That somehow a divorce from your wife also means one from your children.
Even the other half of fathers that stay seem to be just as absent these days. Either they are at the office, trying to earn a extra buck for material things that they don't need or at their softball league trying to impress all of the Major League scouts that are looking for overweight 30 year olds to become the next Roy Hobbs.
We let TV and video games be our babysitters while we are chatting, tweeting, and trying to find ten year old profile pictures for our Facebook and MySpace pages.
If we would just take a couple of weeks to come home from work on time, put away the games of our youth, and disconnect from the world of politics and social networking we all might see that being a father is pretty incredible after all.
