Nothing Says New York Taxi Like Nissan
July 27th 2011 01:46
The New York Taxi and Limousine Commission recently chose the Nissan NV200 to replace its aging fleet of Ford Crown Victorias. The Japanese car maker wins an exclusive ten year contract to furnish the city its cab vehicles. Although there was no front runner, many car experts wanted something that would be unique to the city.
Motor Trend voiced its support for Turkish automakers, Karsan, which offered to build its entry at the old Studebaker factory in Brooklyn.
The Karsan also offered better seating, especially for the handicapped, and a few more options than the more green Nissan. The Karsan was powered by a v-6 while the Nissan is powered by a four cylinder.
The Ford entry seems to have finished a distant third, disappointing as it would have been nice to have an American car maker produce cabs for its largest city.
All of the choices are a major upgrade over the Crown Vics, with more comfortable seating, better ability to use wifi, and easier credit card payments.
