Once In A Blue Moon
December 31st 2009 02:56
We have all probably heard the term "once in a blue moon" but how rare is that? According to what definition you use it could be as much as one in every 2.7 years.
So will we be having a Blue Moon tomorrow night?
Some think that a blue moon is the third full moon in a season that contains four of them.
By this definition, there would be no Blue Moon on December 31st; instead, the last one was in May 2008, and the next happens in November 2010.
If you are one that believes a Blue Moon is the second full moon in a calendar month then get ready to see a Blue Moon tonight.
Thankfully to put arguments to rest the concept of a Blue Moon as the second full Moon in a month, as well as it being the third full Moon in a season with four, are both listed now as definitions in the American Heritage Dictionary
The last occurrence of two full Moons in one month was in May 2007 and the next one will be in August 2012.

Very interesting though. I've never heard of the seasonal definition.
