The End Of James Bond?
April 20th 2010 21:15
For years James Bond has taken on evil well financed geniuses and somehow, against all odds, defeated each and every one.
Bond may have finally met his match however, his latest nemesis is not named Dr. No, Ernst Blofeld, or even Goldfinger. This evil villian goes by the name Global Recession.
Struggling film studio MGM announced recently that it is indefinitely suspending production of the latest Bond film because of "continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio."
MGM has amassed a staggering $3.7 billion in debt, and was put up for sale in November.
This news comes at the worst time for Bond fans. It seemed that the franchise was on the right track with Daniel Craig. A Bond that appealed to both male and female fans. The next film was also going to be directed by Oscar winning filmmaker Sam Mendes.
Unfortunately the Bond franchise may not be the only casualty of MGM's troubles. The studio is scheduled to co-finance "The Hobbit," the prequel movie to "The Lord of the Rings," with New Line. Now a shadow could be cast over that production's budget and schedule.
To me Bond and The Hobbit are hardly risky endeavers. I see them more as safe investments with global appeal. Even during this recession each series is capable of earning hundred of millions worldwide.
