The State Formerly Known As Providence Plantations
June 26th 2009 04:17
Rhode Island has moved one step closer to changing its name from "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" to simply Rhode Island. House lawmakers voted 70-3 to let the voters decide on the state's name. Lawmakers were concerned that the word plantation would be offensive to African-Americans.
Plantation is an 15th century word generally meaning " a large group of plants or trees under cultivation"
Here is the full definition according to Webster's
1: a usually large group of plants and especially trees under cultivation2: a settlement in a new country or region <Plymouth Plantation>3 a: a place that is planted or under cultivation b: an agricultural estate usually worked by resident labor.
I think it is safe to say that no one living in Rhode Island today owned slaves.
Liberal shame is indeed alive and well in the northeast.
