Vegemite Getting Makeover

July 6th 2009 04:26
In one of the riskiest marketing moves since the New Coke fiasco in the United States, Kraft is introducing a smoother spread with vegemite mixed with cream cheese. I hope it goes well for the Aussie nation. I actually had a vegemite sandwich here in the States once..not bad, but I'll stick with the old standby of bananas with peanut butter and jelly.

Damned piece of genius . . . .

Yeah right . . .

I'm guessing some marketing guru imported from the UK or US has had some brain explosion.

Why don't we deck out the coat of arms in Nike jackets next . . .

There's a saying - When You're On A Good Thing - Stick To It.

Too right!

Or - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Why do they have to #%# around with it?
My guess is that the brain explosion theory is right!
Somehow mixing in cream cheese must be cheaper for them and they'll make more money out of it?

Hope it backfires and they go broke and have to sell it back to an Aussie company.

But in the meantime, they better leave the ORIGINAL ALONE!!

Men at Work is the only reference to vegemite that I can recall. I can't believe you had it in the states. What the hell is it?

Ewwww.

That's directed at both the new product, and the supposedly sexy ad that they have for Vegemite over there.... a little different to the 'happy little Vegemite' ad campaigns we have in Oz!

From what I recall it had sort of a smoky meaty taste...definitely not by first choice for a sandwich spread. I had had it here a couple of years back and here is the Wiki page on the ingredients

vegemite mostly just tastes like salt, it is intended to be applied sparingly to your toast or sandwich

i dont know what the big deal is, its not like theyre stopping production of the original, theyre just adding variety to the range

we already had vegemite cheese singles, and cheesymite scrolls, and dominos vegemite cheese bread, i think theres even vegemite le snacks and shapes biscuits

Thankfully, I've never heard of any of those products, but I'm in the country so perhaps our local duolopoly doesn't stock them.

As to changing vegemite, I noticed in the US picture above they've already changed the jar and lid! A few weeks back I saw one here with a gold lid, but it turned out only a promo or something.

Yep, delicious taste - great on toast or with cheese in sandwiches, or to flavour stews, casseroles etc.

It's not something you have to have every day, but it's something you always want around - and not have it f@#cked around with.

Looking at that poster above, that vegemite and the cheeky babe thing does not work.

Eeewww!

Not seeing that cross-promoted crap is one of the bonuses of living in the country.

geez how deep into the country are you living?

i lived in rural Tasmania for the last 18 months and these products were available everywhere down there

pretty deep - feral country almost.

Our nearest duopolies regularly run out of tinned tomatoes.

i think i would wilt and die in such a place

i cant even survive when the chemist doesnt open on a sunday

yeah - perhaps lol - but you tend to need chemists less when you live in this type of environment.
In fact I can't remember the last time I went to one - more than 10 yrs ago at least.

But don't forget you have Hobart - we have red-necked Dullsville - there's no incentive to go there for anything other than work.

You had some??? Cool! I've been keeping a look out for the past few years but had no luck. I think this will be like the Coke fiasco. They'd better keep the regular stuff available!

hi hazius,

it would not matter where i lived, i would need constant access to a chemist . . . chronic back injury

are you out near Bridgetown?

Comment by hazius

Gday Morgan,

Ah - not good about the back injury.

Bridgetown? - you know of the place then?
No, much further south, past Manjimup.

The place used to be a timber siding when the railway operated 50 or so years ago. There's just a wooden school (now used as a hall) and farms and orchards - with a few out-of-towners like me blown in here and there.
It's getting a bit crowded actually. Yesterday I saw two cars.

Are you a naturally-born Taswegian? - or just stayin a-while?

no i dont know it well, i had a grandparent who lived in Perth and as a child my family did the Nullarbor Plain drive many times, we lived in Perth (Kallaroo) at one point . . . i kind of remember visiting the coastal areas of the south-west . . . i just presumed you were inland from how you were describing things

im from Newcastle, NSW . . . my parents retired to Tasmania, and after i hurt my back i lived with them temporarily while i was sorting out a few medical things

i live just north of Sydney right now

We're a mobile population down here in Oz, eh?
I've lived in the NT, QLD and Vic and have done the nullabor a few times - a more boring drive would be hard to find I think? - though the city folks seem to like it.

I'm moving to NSW end of this year or early next hopefully - looking at some places around Coffs Harbour/Nimbin, where I'll be eating lots of vegemite . . .

cheers

Nimbin! haha

i also lived in Ballina as a tiny tot . . . my parents moved around quite a bit in my pre-teen years, its a shame i was so young when i did all my travel, the memories of these places are getting a bit foggy now

i remember my mum was genuinely scared of the rumours of UFO sightings out on the nullabor and refused to drive at night

Hi Morgan - laugh - yep, nice area around there, north facing aspect, chocolate loam, plenty of water - sun - what else is there ...?

Time to do a bit of travelling again if those memories are blurring .... That's one of my goals - to re-discover a place in QLD (a little water-fall and water-hole) I visited when I was about 3. A few years ago when the ol' ying and yang were PERFECTLY alligned if u know what I mean, memories of this place (and memories of emotions) came suddenly back. I can remember everything, even the chill of the dark water - and I remember that at the time I was aware of something (strange?/special?)
Will be revealing when I'm there.

Wow - UFOs!!! - I take it you weren't abducted, then??
