Where Do I Get The Free Health Care?

April 8th 2010 01:35
“Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner” James Bovard

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship". - Alexander Fraser Tytler, 18th century Historian and Jurist

There were two depressing items in the news today. The first item, which could have been easily remedied if people would have actually read the bill, envolves thousands of citizens inundating insurance offices and local government agencies wanting to sign up for the "free health care plan".

If they would have read the bill they would have known that the majority of benefits, if there is even a benefit to this monstrosity, don't start until 2014. The insurance is also not free. It may be subsidized by your neighbor, if you are among the poor, but it is not free. For most people their insurance rates will not go down and the assurance from Obama that his plan would cut families' premiums by 25% is just another in a long line of broke promises. Maybe this would not have happened if he hadn't broken another promise of posting the bill online for five days before it was voted on by Congress.

The second item was something that I have been talking about for years. Fifty percent of Americans no longer pay any federal income taxes, leaving the other half to pick up the spending for all federal programs. Personally I don't think you should be able to vote if you don't pay taxes. I also don't think that citizens should vote for any office higher than the House Of Representatives. We are in danger of sliding into dangerous territory and becoming a democracy, which is nothing more than a mob rules mentality. If the majority don't pay taxes then they are always going to vote for whatever gives them the most benefits and the minority is powerless to stop them. This is the idea behind the health care plan and immigration reform. The Dems are using these tactics to empower themselves and guarantee themselves a voting block for decades to come.

Let's hope (and pray) that enough citizens can see through the blue smoke and mirrors to the reality of the disaster before it's too late. Too bad that when so many people were all excited over "change" they never thought to ask if it would be a change for the better.
