Why I'm a TomTom Guy

Because I am on the road so much, I'm constantly asked about my choice of GPS brands. I'm really no expert as I even get lost in my own city sometimes, but I will offer an opinion on the brand that works for me.
Although, Garmin and Magellan are both great units and utilize the more trusted NAVTEQ mapping provider, I always use a TomTom to guide me on the road.
TomTom has features that the others do not offer. They update their maps four times a year as opposed to once a year with most brands. They also guarantee the latest map when you buy any of their units. What I usually do is to give my old units away and buy a new one each year. A new lower end unit goes for around 100 dollars compared to map downloads costing 60 bucks.
TomTom also has what they call MapShare technology, allowing users to share detours and point of interest updates. I downloaded a great map of The Smoky Mountains that someone worked really hard to add hundreds of locations for other users.
You can also download different voices. Some are free while others will cost a small fee. I've downloaded Beavis, Carl from Sling Blade, and Homer Simpson to my unit.
Another nice little feature of TomTom's is the Fold and Go suction cup. I can easily stick my GPS in my front pocket and take it with me in a rental.
